Keen audiences of parents, counsellors and teachers attended forums presented by TIE UP THE BLACK DOG COMMITTEE and the Darling Downs Secondary Schools’ Principals’ Association in Toowoomba and Goondiwindi last month.
Speakers Drs Paula Barrett, Kris Ojala and Sacha Rombouts gave the audiences a good insight into the issues surrounding mental health in teenagers. They spoke about anxiety/depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and Asperger’s and Autism Spectrum Disorder, but they also gave an insight into the importance of prevention and the development of resilience and coping mechanisms as well as treatment of a diagnosed disorder.
Paula, Kris and Sacha work at the Pathways Health and Research Centre at Woolongabba which has developed world-renowned resilience and prevention programs used in schools from primary through high school levels.
TIE UP THE BLACK DOG COMMITTEE thank all those involved in helping us get this event “to air” in both communities. The feedback we have had has been so positive. We hope to be able to bring speakers from Pathways back into these communities in 2013. They are very willing and we will be able!!
